Dirk vs. Zach

For the past year, I've been having an art trade battle with Dirk Erik Schulz, a German based freelance artist who's done work for Doug Tennapel and is completely insane! We've been going back and forth drawing each other's characters since 2009, we were supposed to do 3 pics each but he sprang an extra surprise pic on me so I had to do the same for him.

His wonky style, appealing colors, skillful use of textures and diverse subject matter is what draws me to this artist, and might be why we've become really good friends.

So what I'm going to do is showcase both of our works, comparing the fanart to the original.

Alot of people have said that we have similar art styles. But this post isn't to decide which one of us is the better artist, no no, its to show that our style of drawing, designing, thinking, and putting together an image are very different.

We each kept those little things that make eachother's characters who they are while still taking a lot (and I mean A LOT) of artistic liberties to make it our own, as well as a tribute.

In closing, Dirk is a great guy, a classy motherfucker, a psychopath of concepts, and one of the most talented artists I know, all rolled up into one.

If you don't know about him, be sure to check out his DeviantArt account. You won't be disappointed.

EDIT: Here's what Dirk himself had to say about it:

Hehe, I see so much in our battle:

1. Our original characters are on both sides 'less' detailed than the fanart/trade pic. We really took liberties with the other character and were more brave to explore the limits.

2. Your drawings have a more jagged feeling, while mine are more round ones. We share the same detail love and zanyness, but the slight different use of other ground shapes/tools change the overall look.... See More

3. We are both aliens.

4. We share the same love to ugly creatures and weird things. And understand that these are the elemenst to create interesting characters. And so we add it to our OCs.
